Young People
& Employment
Fancy earning yourself some extra cash while at school? Already
juggling school and work?
Either way
you
need to know where you stand and the law.
There
are laws to protect young
people, which include rules about the age
at which you can work, the number of hours you can work, where
you can work and what you can do when you work there.
Please note: the following info
is only relevant to Young People who are of compulsory school
age. This includes all year 11 students, up until the last
Friday in June, even if they are already 16. The rules and
regulations talked about DO NOT end on your 16th
Birthday!
Age you can work…
No body can be
employed under the age of 13
years.
Employment means
you doing
ANY kind of work
for somewhere that aims to make
a profit, including working for your parents, or even working
for free!
Work you
cannot do…
All
work a young person does must be
light duties,
so you cannot use big machines or carry anything heavy.
No young person can work in:
·
Bars
·
Commercial kitchens
(restaurants, chip shops, takeaways)
·
Factories
·
Any
Industrial setting
e.g. construction work
Hours you can work…
No
young person can work
before 7.00am of after 07.00pm
on any day (this includes Saturdays, Sundays and
school holidays). So, that paper round may not seem so innocent
now.
No young
person can work for more then
2 hours on
any school day
(no more than 1 hour before school).
A young
person can only work a
maximum of
12 hours
in a school week.
No young
person
aged 13/14
may work more then
5 hours a
day on Saturday/holidays
(max 25 hours a week in school holidays).
No young
person
aged 15/16
may work more then
8 hours a
day on a Saturday/holidays
(max 35 hours a week in a school holidays).
No young
person can work more then
2 hours on a
Sunday!
