Ringtone Scams

Have you ever texted for a ringtone, had your credit wiped but received no ringtone? Ever texted for one ringtone and then had one sent through every week?

musical notesMore and more complaints are being received about companies not sending ringtones out, or signing people up to receive regular ringtones when they only want one.

Always read the small print before texting or phoning for a ringtone – a lot of the time the advert will state if you are subscribing to receive regular texts in the small print. Also, check that the ringtone or wallpaper you are texting for is compatible with your mobile.

If you are getting expensive texts and want to stop them, text the number back with just the words “STOP ALL”. If this doesn’t work you can report them to the regulator, ICSTIS. Its also worth going online if the ringtone company has a website as you can sometimes unsubscribe there. If you still have no joy, you can contact Trading Standards

ICSTIS  have produced a  new advice Leaflet on using text/SMS subscription services > Download

So remember...

  • Always read the small print
  • If you receive unwanted messages reply “Stop All”
  • If in doubt report to ICSTIS or Trading Standards
