The following information will help you keep your mobile phone safe.

10,000 mobile phones are stolen a month. 67% of all street theft where a mobile phone is taken the phone is the only thing stolen. Half the victims are under 18 and the average age of the thief is just 16 years old. 500,000 of these crimes are committed against children aged 11-15.

The best ways to keep you and your phone safe:

·        Keep your phone out of sight.

·        Only give your numbers to people you can trust such as family and friends.

·        Try not to use your phone in the street. If you need to phone someone in public do it in a discrete place.

·        Use a PIN code to lock your phone.

·        If you are walking alone keep your phone on silent or vibrate.

·        Do not text or call people whilst walking along.

·        Security mark your phone with your postcode and house number. The best place is underneath the battery near to the SIM card.  This means the police can return it to you if they find it.

·        Some phones have an IMEI number, which can identify the phone. Press *#06# (star hash 06 hash) into your mobile and it will display a 15 digit number. Note the number down and keep it safe, then if your phone is stolen you can tell the mobile phone company to stop anyone using the phone.

So remember…

·        Mobile phone theft is a big problem, so keep your phone safe.

·        If your phone is stolen or lost tell the police or a parent or guardian straight away.
